The word Ikat comes from Indonesia which means “to tie”, “to bind” or “to weave”. Ikat is an ethnic pattern that can be found in textiles, pottery, and other handcrafts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and the Indian subcontinent. This pattern has been known since ancient times and it is made on cotton fabric with the help of tie-dyeing technique. It’s a method of dyeing fabric by tying parts of it, which are not to be colored, together. The knots are then dyed with a different color than the rest of the cloth. The patterns can be used in various designs including geometric shapes, floral patterns, or paisley designs. The fabric texture also comes in various textures such as solid color, striped pattern, or polka dot pattern.
